PRP Hair Treatment

PRP for hair- intro

Introduction

PRP Hair Treatment

Having a head of thick, full, hair is something we all want. But as we age, as our bodies change, so does the density of our hair. Whether it is postpartum issues from childbirth, hereditary genes, medical issues, or our diets, hair thinning and hair loss can affect our self-esteem and the way we view ourselves. However, with the introduction of advanced technology and innovation, there is a treatment that can help reverse hair loss. PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma, has gained wide attention in the cosmetic and medical world for its ability to restore hair loss. Just a few miles north of downtown Boston, at Prosilience Studio in Arlington, MA, Dr. Catharine Crawford is pleased to offer this procedure to her clients with astounding results.

PRP for hair- what

What is PRP for Hair?

PRP is a non-surgical treatment designed to treat hair loss. The process involves drawing blood from your bloodstream, processing the blood in a centrifuge, and then injecting the platelets deep into the scalp to reach the bottom of the hair follicle. This process stimulates a specialized population of cells named dermal papilla cells, which play a critical role in hair growth.

Sometimes this approach is combined with other hair loss procedures or medications for the most effective results. Dr. Crawford can help plan out a treatment that caters to your specific needs. A PRP hair treatment consists of 2-3 appointments for the best results, with maintenance treatments as an option to consider every 4-6 months.

What are the benefits of a PRP for Hair treatment?

Dr. Crawford performs Boston area PRP Hair treatments on male and female clients at our Arlington, MA studio. Here is a list of what PRP can treat:

  • Hair thinning
  • Stimulate growth after Alopecia loss
  • Restore thickness to hair density
  • Restore receding hairlines
  • Restore shine and vibrance to hair

This is by no means an exhaustive list of what PRP can treat and benefit. When you schedule a consultation with Dr. Crawford, she will walk you through a more extensive list of benefits and potential side effects, discussing how the treatment can help your hair loss problem.

Who are the best candidates for the PRP for Hair treatment?

If you have experienced natural hair loss from aging, you might be a good candidate for PRP for Hair Treatment in Arlington and the greater Boston area. If you have Alopecia and want to know how PRP can potentially benefit you, speak with Dr. Crawford as there may be instances where it can be effective. It is important to note that PRP is not a cure for Alopecia. When you discuss your needs with Dr. Crawford and what you are looking to achieve with this treatment, we recommend having a realistic goal in mind. For patients who are generally healthy, and who are not excessive smokers or heavy drinkers, PRP can have a huge benefit for your hair. If you have any serious medical issues that require medication, discuss this with Dr. Crawford, as she will never recommend a treatment that could be potentially harmful, or not benefit your needs.

What to expect on the day of a PRP for Hair treatment

Before coming to your appointment at Prosilience Studio in Arlington, MA, Dr. Crawford may give you some pre-operative instructions to follow. On the day of your appointment, when you arrive at our practice, you will fill out paperwork before being taken into the treatment room where Dr. Crawford will walk you through the process.

A topical numbing agent is applied before the PRP session to ensure your comfort.

The first step in a PRP Hair treatment is to draw your blood. The blood draw is typically taken from your arm.

The second step is where the blood is placed into a centrifuge (a machine that spins rapidly to separate fluids of different densities), to extract the plasma. After about 10 minutes in the centrifuge, your blood will have separated into three layers:

  • platelet-poor plasma
  • platelet-rich plasma
  • red blood cells

The third step in the process is to inject the platelet-rich plasma into areas of the scalp that need increased hair growth. Depending on the areas being treated, the entire process can roughly take 1-2 hours.

There is no downtime required after a PRP Hair treatment, and you can resume regular activities. Dr. Crawford and her team will equip you with all the information you need for the recovery period following your first appointment.

There is no downtime after a PRP Hair Treatment, but it is important not to place any extra pressure on the treatment areas. Dr. Crawford may recommend avoiding hats and certain types of restrictive head covering for a day or two.

It is typical to feel some slight irritation or itchiness on the treatment site which you can alleviate with over-the-counter pain medication. Once your first appointment is complete, Dr. Crawford will continue to assess your new hair growth in your follow-up appointments.
